Iran: Hamas leader killed by short-range missile
Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh during a press conference in Tehran, Iran on March 26, 2024.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday that Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas — the terrorist group designated by the United States and the European Union — was killed by a short-range missile.

She accused the United States of supporting the attack, which she blamed on Israel, Iranian state television reported.

The Revolutionary Guard repeated the call for revenge, and said it used "a rocket filled with material weighing about seven kilograms" to kill the Hamas leader in the apartment where he was staying in Tehran on Wednesday. She said the attack caused extensive destruction, but did not elaborate on the location of the apartment.

Haniyeh was in Iran to attend the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

"The attack was planned and carried out by the Zionist regime and supported by the US," the Guard said in a statement published on state television.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's murder, but neither has it denied it. However, Israel has repeatedly vowed to kill him and other Hamas leaders over the attack the group carried out in southern Israel on October 7, sparking the war in the Gaza Strip.

His killing has fueled fears of a wider regional conflict and outright war between Israel and Iran if Tehran retaliates.

In April, Iran launched an attack on Israeli territory with drones and missiles. Israel shot down almost all of the nearly 300 Iranian missiles and drones, thanks to help from the United States and other allies.

Iran does not recognize Israel and supports groups against Israel, including Hamas and the Lebanese group, Hezbollah./ REL
