US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has canceled a pre-trial agreement reached with people accused of plotting the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the BBC reports. 

The original deal, which reportedly would have spared the attackers the death penalty, was criticized by some of the victims' families.

The 9/11 attacks were the deadliest on American soil since the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which killed 2,400 people. These attacks sparked the "War on Terror" and military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Austin named five defendants including the alleged ringleader of the plot, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who are all being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The original agreement named three men.

"The responsibility for such a decision must rest with me as the superior authority. I withdraw from the three pretrial agreements," he said. 

The White House said Wednesday it played no role in the plea deal.

In September, the Biden administration reportedly rejected the terms of a plea deal with five men held at the US Navy base in Cuba, including Mohammed. /CNA
