As the election season in the United States is dominated by twists and turns, social media is reacting in similar ways, with images of coconuts and cat ladies. Voice of America correspondent Tina Trinh explains how these relate to the presidential election in the United States.

What do coconuts, childless women and English pop singer Charli XCX have in common?

It's all part of the internet debate when it comes to the presidential election in the United States. With just over three months until Election Day, voters encounter social media feeds full of malicious images and rhetoric.

" We are practically run in this country by the Democrats through our corporate oligarchs , by a bunch of cat-loving ladies who don't have kids, who are desperate about their lives and the choices they've made, and so they want to make it depressed the rest of the country as well ," said JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate.

The Republican vice presidential nominee's comment about Democratic lawmakers was shared widely on social media, with numerous images of cats and videos criticizing him.

Mr. Vance has been criticized by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston.

He himself says that the comment was taken out of context and that the policies of the Democrats are against the family.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign team is pointing to a speech she gave last year, when she quoted her mother's advice:

" Do you think you've just fallen out of a coconut tree? It exists in the context of everything you're living in and the things in front of you ," said Vice President Harris.

Originally posted as a joke by the Republican National Committee, the quote has now been transformed on social media by supporters of Ms Harris with images of coconuts.

Ms. Harris's recent entry into the race has garnered considerable attention online, including support from pop star Charli XCX, who declared on the X Network that Kamala Harris is the one.

In response, Ms. Harris' campaign team adopted the album's green colors, and its small print, for the campaign's homepage on the X network.

Meanwhile, the singer-songwriters reworked the pop artist's song with references to the coconut tree.

Social networks are thus involved at a fast pace in an electoral season that has been full of surprises./ VOA
