Hezbollah confirms the killing of senior commander Fuad Shukr

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah confirmed the killing of senior military commander Fuad Shukr on Wednesday. The confirmation comes more than 24 hours after an Israeli strike hit a building on the southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital where he was staying.

The group announced that its Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah would deliver a speech on the occasion of Commander Shukr's funeral on Thursday.

The body of the Hezbollah commander was found in the rubble of a building in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Wednesday.

The Israeli military announced Tuesday evening that it had killed Shukri, whom it blamed for a weekend attack that left more than 10 people, mostly children, dead in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah group denied any involvement in Saturday's attack.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that Shukri "has the blood of many Israelis on his hands. Now, we have shown that the blood of our people has a price and that there is no place inaccessible to our forces for this purpose".

An official dealing with security issues elsewhere in the region confirmed on condition of anonymity that Commander Shukr had died of his injuries. At least two women and two children were also killed in the Israeli strike, medical and security sources said.

Shukri was an adviser to Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, according to the Israeli military's announcement of his death.

The attack in Beirut came shortly before the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the early hours of Wednesday in Iran, in a development that has further raised fears of wider regional escalation. Hezbollah is an ally of Hamas./ VOA
