Eyewitness account of the "Titan" tragedy: We were afraid, they were
Rory Golden

A witness to the serious incident that occurred with the submarine "Titan" has told "BBC News" of the fear and anxiety he felt when he lost contact with the people on board.

Rory Golden was on the Oceangate expedition when contact with his five passengers was lost during a dive in June 2023.

"We had this image in our heads of them being down there, running out of oxygen and in the freezing cold, being terribly scared and scared," he said.

But after learning the submarine had exploded just hours after diving, he said it was a comfort to know those on board had not suffered.

"When the submarine was delayed, we were not unduly worried because communications break down a lot in the ocean. But when the alarm was finally raised, that's when we realized there were some serious issues," he added.

A major search and rescue operation was launched by the US Coast Guard.

A few days later, the sounds of crashes were detected underwater, raising hopes that they came from the missing submarine.

"We lived with false hope for four days. There are still many questions to be answered," he said.

The discovery of the Titan's wreckage four days after it disappeared confirmed the fate of those on board.

"We all cried when the remains were found," he said./CNA
