France battles biggest fire since 1949

French firefighters are battling for the third day in a row to bring under control the largest fire in France in almost eight decades, which has burned over 16,000 hectares, killed one person and destroyed dozens of homes.

Footage from Reuters TV shows plumes of smoke rising over a forested area in the Aude region, southern France.

Drone footage shows large areas of burned vegetation.

One person has died, three are missing and two others, including a firefighter, are in serious condition, local authorities said.

"So far, the fire has not been brought under control," Christophe Magny, one of the officials leading the firefighting operation, told BFM television on Thursday.

He added that he hopes the flames will be brought under control later in the day.

The fire, about 100 kilometers from the border with Spain, not far from the Mediterranean Sea, started on Tuesday and has spread rapidly.

The fire has already engulfed an area one and a half times the size of Paris. Officials have said it is the biggest fire in France since 1949.

The fire is now spreading more slowly, Environment Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher told France Info radio.

Scientists say that hotter, drier summers in the Mediterranean region make it more vulnerable to wildfires.

France's meteorological office has warned of a new heatwave that will begin in other parts of southern France on Friday and is expected to last for several days./ REL
