Hail on watermelons/ Kherson fields under Russian drone attacks

Even in the farmlands of Kherson, Ukraine, the threat of war is felt up close.

Farmers harvesting watermelons on their land were recently forced to flee when they noticed a drone moving overhead.

A farmer, Oleksandr, found his land on fire. He believes the fire was caused by a drone strike that contained incendiary materials.

"I was driving around the country and I saw a drone there. You can see the crater. The watermelons are damaged," he told Current Time television.

"We saw an incendiary device. A yellow drone was there. It probably went up in the air and then crashed."

"Maybe the fires we're seeing aren't accidental. Maybe they're the result of drone attacks," he said.

The Kherson region, in northern Crimea, was occupied by Russian forces in 2022. However, Ukrainian military troops regained the territory north of the Dnieper River later that year.

Oleksandr returned as soon as he could and started growing watermelons on his land.

"Immediately after the liberation of Kherson, we came to return watermelons to the region," he said.

"We were among the first to come here."

In Ukraine, Kherson is synonymous with watermelon, as the rich soil of this region is believed to produce the freshest fruits.

Farmers are now struggling with the huge demand for watermelons across Ukraine.

"We are seeing a huge increase in demand for Kherson watermelons. They have become extremely popular this year," said Dmytro Yunusov, director of the agriculture department at the Kherson regional administration.

"Farmers have increased the area of arable land and buyers have placed advance orders for watermelons that have not yet grown."

Agriculture is flourishing there, but residents fear that the fighting could harm them again.

Some farmers work the land in regions far from the war front, or have abandoned the area entirely.

The sound of drones over the watermelon fields is another reminder that no aspect of Ukrainian life has been left untouched by the war./ REL
