Defense investment/ German Army places 770 million euro order with Rheinmetall

Germany's armed forces, the Bundeswehr, have placed an order with military products company Rheinmetall for around 1,400 military logistics vehicles, worth 770 million euros.

The Düsseldorf-based defense firm said in a statement on Monday that the deal includes 963 vehicles with swap body systems, which have interchangeable containers. It also includes 425 unarmored transport vehicles (UTVs), which are unarmored trucks used in low-risk areas.

"As a reliable partner of the Bundeswehr, we are pleased to be delivering additional vehicles and thus contributing to the mobility and operational readiness of the armed forces," said André Barthel, chairman of the board of Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles.

The Bundeswehr is currently undergoing a major process to update its technology, and Germany has pledged to increase its country's defense spending to 3.5% of gross domestic product by 2029. /CNA
