Wild weather over the weekend/Rare snowfall in Australian cities

Thousands of residents in Australia's southeastern state of New South Wales were affected by power outages on Monday after a weekend of wild weather brought rare snow and rain.

Heavy snow covered much of the northern part of the state, while State Emergency Services responded to over 2,000 calls for assistance, local media reported.

Local residents said the region had not seen such heavy snowfall for 10 years. Northern parts of New South Wales received up to 40 centimetres of snow.

The bad weather forced the closure of several schools on the state's north-central coast, while authorities issued flood warnings in some of the affected areas.

According to New South Wales emergency services, the heavy snowfall, combined with torrential rain and storms in other parts of the state, led to more than 1,455 incidents over the weekend.

More than 100 vehicles were stranded on the road and tens of thousands of homes were left without power. /CNA
