Erdogan calls President Putin / US proposal for war in Ukraine discussed

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Monday. As reported by foreign media, the call between the two leaders focused on bilateral relations, as well as the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

"The President said that Turkey, as it did in the past, was ready to contribute to any diplomatic initiative and plan that would pave the way for permanent peace in our region, to guide negotiations between (Russia and Ukraine)," a statement from the Turkish Presidency's Communications Directorate said.

In a statement, the Kremlin said Putin and Erdogan discussed a US proposal to end the war in Ukraine.

"Vladimir Putin noted that these proposals, in the version in which we have considered them, are consistent with the discussions at the Russian-American summit in Alaska and, in principle, can be used as a basis for a final peaceful solution," the Kremlin said, referring to a meeting in August between Putin and US President Donald Trump. "The interest of the Russian side in a political and diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis was reaffirmed," the statement stressed.

This Monday, the US and Ukraine continued talks in Lausanne, Switzerland, to draft a peace plan acceptable to both sides, consisting of 28 points. /CNA
