Israel dismisses several generals over October 7 attack

The Israeli military announced that it has dismissed three generals and taken disciplinary measures against several other senior officials over their failure to prevent the October 2023 attack by Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – which is the deadliest attack in the country's history.

The announcement comes two weeks after Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir called for a "systematic investigation" into the failures that led to the attack, although the government has yet to establish a state investigative commission despite public pressure.

The list of dismissed generals includes three division commanders, one of whom served as head of military intelligence.

The Israeli army statement said that the three bear personal responsibility for the failure of the armed forces to prevent the attack launched by Hamas.

The dismissals come after all three generals had already resigned from their posts, including the head of the southern command, General Yaron Finkelman.

Meanwhile, disciplinary measures were said to have been taken against the head of the navy and air force, as well as four generals and several senior officials.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said that the failures that led to the October 7 attack must be addressed after the war in Gaza is over. His government has so far failed to form an investigative commission to determine who bears responsibility for failing to prevent the attack.

During the attack, Hamas killed nearly 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 others, sparking the war in Gaza.

As a result of Israel's retaliatory attacks, more than 69,000 people were killed in Gaza, according to data from the Gaza Health Ministry - figures that the United Nations considers reliable./REL
