Convicted of leaking confidential information/ Spain's Attorney General

Spain's Chief Prosecutor, Alvaro Garcia Ortiz, has announced his resignation after the Supreme Court found him guilty last week of leaking confidential information.

The unprecedented case is a blow to the leftist coalition government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who appointed Alvaro Garcia Ortiz in 2022 and has repeatedly defended his innocence.

In a letter published in international media, Garcia Ortiz said that his decision to resign, ahead of the sentence that would have banned him from his post for two years, came out of respect for judicial decisions.

"Although my decision stems directly from the verdict, I am convinced that I have served faithfully the institution to which I am honored to belong, with a clear call to public service, a sense of duty and institutional loyalty," the letter to Justice Minister Felix Bolanos read.

His removal was widely expected although the Supreme Court has yet to give its reasoning for the decision and Garcia Ortiz can still appeal to Spain's constitutional court and ultimately to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

"We respect the court's decision, but we do not agree with it," said government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria after Garcia Ortiz's resignation, adding that the lack of unanimity and the announcement of the decision without a full ruling set a worrying precedent. /CNA
