The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has welcomed discussions around US President Donald Trump's 28-point peace proposal.

In an interview with CNN, Kallas stressed that pressure on Russia should not be lifted in the pursuit of lasting peace. She said that we should not forget who does not want peace, which is Russia.

"We should be discussing how Russia will not invade again and how Russia can stop this war, and not what Ukraine should give up because there is a victim and an aggressor in this war ," Kallas said. 

Kallas, who is also a vice-president of the European Commission, said more attention should be paid to Russia's role in the negotiations and the country's commitment to a lasting peace. According to her, there should be less focus on what Ukraine is expected to accept.

"What are the demands on Russia?" Kallas said after emphasizing that none of Trump's 28 points require Russia to make concessions.

"First, we must ask them to adhere to their international agreements that they have not respected so far. If we impose restrictions on Ukraine, which has not invaded, then Russia gets what it wants," he said. /CNA
