A Russian drone has crashed into an apartment block in eastern Kiev, killing six people and wounding dozens more, in a wave of attacks across the Ukrainian capital. As emergency workers searched the rubble in the Lisovyi area, a Kiev resident named Vita described how the drone had pierced the building, exploding on the other side.
Meanwhile, Ukraine intensified its attacks on Russia's oil infrastructure, with drone strikes on one of its largest export terminals in Novorossiysk, on the Black Sea coast. Officials said a fire broke out at the Sheskharis oil refinery and a ship and an apartment block were hit.
Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said three crew members and another man were injured in the attack that damaged the main oil depot and a container terminal. Mayor Andrei Kravchenko declared a state of emergency and Reuters reported that oil exports were suspended.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine had fired long-range "Long Neptune" cruise missiles during its overnight strikes on Russia, without specifying what they were targeting. Condemning Russia's overnight strikes as despicable and calculated, Zelensky said some 430 drones and 18 missiles had been launched and dozens of high-rise buildings had been damaged.
A drone strike on a market in Chornomorsk in the south of the country killed two people. In Kiev, residential buildings were attacked in almost every district, the head of the city's military administration, Timur Tkachenko, said on Telegram.
He issued a shelter-in-place warning at one minute past midnight local time on Thursday evening, writing "it's noisy in Kiev."
The fire service in the Lisovyi district later said the drone had hit the seventh floor of the apartment building. When it exploded, all floors - from the eighth to the fourth - collapsed, a spokesman told the BBC.
Vita said she saw four bodies being carried out of the apartment a few doors down from hers: "I saw it with my own eyes."
Two cranes lifted emergency workers out of the block as crews searched through the destroyed building, throwing broken pieces of wall and shattered glass to the ground.
According to emergency services, falling debris and fires damaged several high-rise apartment buildings, a hospital, school and administrative buildings.
More than 40 people were rescued, they added, including 14 from a fire in an apartment building. Another person was rescued after being pulled from the rubble, they said.
Kiev's energy infrastructure was hit hard, leaving several buildings in the capital without heat, officials said.
"The attack was massive, with drones, with ballistic missiles, with a lot of air defenses in place," Ukrainian MP Lisa Yasko told the BBC. "Very often it felt like the bed was shaking along with the windows."
Medical teams were sent to all the fires, officials said, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko said nine people were being treated in hospital and one man was in an "extremely serious condition."/ CNA, translated by BBC
