Panamanian President: US Military Exercises Do Not Pose a Threat to Venezuela

Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino said Tuesday that US military exercises in his country were not a hostile act against Venezuela.

US troops have conducted survival and combat tactics exercises this year in the Darien jungle on the border with Colombia and at a police base on the Caribbean coast.

The exercises come as the United States has built a strong military presence in the Caribbean, with the stated aim of fighting drug cartels. But the Venezuelan government says they are part of a strategy to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro.

"Panama does not surrender its territory for any type of hostile act against Venezuela or any other country in the world ," the Panamanian President stressed at his weekly press conference.

In April, the United States and Panama signed a cooperation agreement allowing the deployment of American military forces around the Panama Canal, following pressure from US President Donald Trump. The agreement allows the United States to use Panamanian air and naval bases to conduct “exercises” over the next three years.

"There is no type of military presence that has not been authorized by Panama ," President Jose Raul Molino explained. /CNA
