US stops production of 1-cent coin after 230 years

The United States Treasury Department has minted the last 1-cent coin after 230 years of production.

The last coins bear a special Omega stamp and will not be put into circulation, but will be sold at auction.

According to US President Donald Trump, currencies now cost much more to produce than they are worth.

Merchants in many parts of the country have run out of coins and are unable to produce exact change. Meanwhile, banks cannot order coins and are rationing what they have to customers.

One store chain, Sheetz, became so desperate for coins that it briefly ran a promotion offering a free drink to customers who brought in 100 coins.

Another retailer said the coin shortage will cost it millions this year because of the need to round up prices.

The coin problem began in late summer and is worsening as the country enters the holiday shopping season. Of course, no retailer or bank has asked for the coin to remain in circulation./CNA
