Workers at 65 stores in the U.S. have gone on strike for better pay and staffing after negotiations with the coffee chain stalled. Starbucks Workers United is asking the company to resolve hundreds of allegations of unfair labor practices.
More than 1,000 unionized workers from dozens of cities are taking part in a strike against unfair labor practices. The strike was scheduled to coincide with Starbucks' Red Cup Day, a major sales holiday.
The company's offer of a pay raise was no raise in the first year and only 2 percent each year after the first year. The vast majority of workers rejected the offer.
Starbucks said Thursday's strike will affect less than 1% of its thousands of stores. It could spread to more stores if the two sides fail to reach an agreement, the union said in a statement.
In recent years, the company has faced consumer boycotts, new competitors and customer backlash over high prices, as well as turmoil within its leadership team. /CNA
