WHO director calls for a halt to attacks on hospitals in Gaza

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called on Monday for an end to attacks on hospitals in the Gaza Strip, after Israel attacked one and raided another recently.

"Hospitals in Gaza have once again become a battleground, while the health system is at great risk," Tedros said in a post on X.

"We repeat: Stop attacks on hospitals. People in Gaza need access to medical care. Humanitarians need access to provide medical aid. Armistice!” he added.

Israel's military said Hamas militants targeted Al Wafa hospital in Gaza City on Sunday, where the Palestinian civil defense reported seven people were killed.

Hamas is declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Israeli forces also arrested more than 240 Palestinians, including dozens of medical staff from Kamal Adwan Hospital on Friday, including director Hussam Abu Safiya, according to health authorities in the enclave and the Israeli military.

The Israeli military claimed the hospital was being used as a command center for Hamas military operations and that those arrested were suspected militants. She added that Abu Safiya was interrogated on suspicion of being a Hamas operative.

Tedros demanded Abu Safiya's immediate release and said Al-Ahli hospital had also come under attack.

He added that WHO and partners have distributed basic medical supplies, food and water, to the Indonesian hospital in Gaza and transferred 10 patients in serious condition to Al Shifa hospital. During the transfer, four patients were arrested, he said.

"We call on Israel to ensure that the health needs and rights of these people are respected," Tedros said.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping nearly 250 others.

Since then, Israel's war of revenge in Gaza has left over 45,000 Palestinians dead, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health./REL
