Trump backs Musk on visa issue for skilled foreign workers

President-elect Donald Trump appears to have sided with billionaire businessman Elon Musk and his supporters in the tech industry in the Republican debate over the H-1B visa program for skilled workers.

In an interview with the New York Post on Saturday, Mr. Trump supported the use of these visas to bring skilled foreign workers to the United States.

On Friday evening Mr Musk, head of the companies Tesla and SpaceX, vowed to firmly defend the H-1B visa program, referring to the technology industry.

In a post on social media platform X, Mr. Musk wrote that: "the reason I'm in America with so many vital people who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is the H1B visa program".

"I will fight for this issue, which you cannot understand," he added.

The topic has become a hot point of debate within the conservative Republican base.

"I have always liked visas and I have always been in favor of them. That's why we have them," Mr. Trump said.

In the past, Mr. Trump has used these visas in his businesses, something he acknowledged during Saturday's interview.

"I have many people with these visas in my properties. I believed in them. I have used them many times. It's a great program," Mr. Trump told the newspaper.

But he did not say whether there would be any change in the number of such visas to be issued after he takes office on January 20.

Mr. Trump's hardline policies on immigration, focused largely on immigrants who are in the country illegally, were a cornerstone of his presidential campaign and a priority issue for his supporters.

Software engineers and others working in the technology industry have used H-1B visas for skilled foreign workers. They say they are a vital tool to fill difficult positions. But critics say they underestimate the American citizens who could take those jobs. Some conservative Republicans have requested that the program be closed./VOA
