From Europe to North Macedonia: The smuggling network of luxury vehicles is hit

The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, has discovered and cracked down on a network that smuggled luxury cars from European Union (EU) countries to North Macedonia.

The raids were carried out on Sunday, December 29 in several locations, including in Skopje, Negotina, Dojran and Manastir, where 10 people are suspected to have been involved.

"The action is aimed at extinguishing an organized criminal group that deals with the smuggling of expensive motor vehicles, the falsification of documents and the abuse of official positions, for which checks were carried out in several locations this morning", wrote the Minister of Labor Interior, Pançe Toshkovski, in a post on Facebook.

Among the suspects, two officials of the administrative services for the registration of vehicles have been identified, who are said to have participated in acts of smuggling, falsification of documents and official documents, as well as hiding goods that are the object of smuggling and fraud customs.

"During the years 2021 and 2022, people, with fake documents and with fake numbers, brought cars into the country that were the subject of an international investigation, as well as cars that otherwise escaped customs control. They registered the vehicles here and resold some of them several times to hide the contraband, after which they sold them to the end users", added the Public Prosecutor's Office in its announcement.

After conducting the preliminary procedure and based on the collected evidence, the Prosecutor's Office said that it will initiate proceedings against a total of 10 people.

As it is known, one of the suspects is a citizen of the Republic of Greece, and the criminal prosecution for him will be transferred to the jurisdiction of Greece, based on the previous cooperation between the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office of Skopje and the Greek authorities./REL
