Israel arrests the director of a hospital in northern Gaza

The Israeli military has arrested a director of one of the few functioning hospitals in northern Gaza, as overnight airstrikes in the enclave killed nine people, including children, Palestinian health officials said on December 28.

The Gaza Ministry of Health said that doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, was arrested by Israeli forces along with dozens of other staff members and taken to a center for interrogation. The ministry said Israeli troops entered the hospital and forced many staff members and patients out.

Israel has not yet commented on the case. But the day before, he denied that he entered the hospital, however he admitted that he ordered people to leave the facility saying that he was carrying out operations against the infrastructure of Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - and militants in that area.

The Israeli military has repeatedly claimed that Hamas operates inside the Kamal Adwan hospital, but has not provided evidence. Hospital officials have denied these Israeli claims.

This hospital has been hit several times in the last three months by Israel, as the army of this country continues its offensive in the northern part of Gaza against Hamas. Earlier in the week, hospital officials said an airstrike killed five staff members.

In Israel's almost 15-month military campaign, Gaza's health system has taken a heavy toll. The World Health Organization said the Kamal Adwan raid had "put out of action" the last major functioning hospital in northern Gaza, saying "this terror must end and the health system must be protected".

Palestinian health authorities said the hospital's patients have been moved to a nearby hospital where the situation "is extremely difficult".

The war in Gaza began last October, after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping 250 others. As a result of the Israeli military campaign, more than 45,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza, and more than 108,000 others have been injured./ REL
