Explosion in a weapons depot in Syria/ 11 victims

Eleven people were killed in an explosion at an arms depot near an industrial area on the outskirts of Damascus, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which spoke of an Israeli attack, something the Israeli military denied.

"We are not aware of any attack by the Israeli army in this area. The IDF did not hit the area," a military source said when asked about the blast in the Andhra industrial zone, 30 kilometers from the Syrian capital.

Rami Abdel Rahman, the director of the Observatory, said that "at least eleven people were killed in the explosion which was probably caused by an Israeli attack".

The warehouse belonged to the forces of the regime of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad. According to Abdel Rahman, the figure is not final.

"The victims are, for the most part, civilians," he said, assuring that after the fall of Assad on December 8, many are looking for military installations "to find anything that can be sold and make them money ", such as wood or metals.

A local official from a neighboring community, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed to AFP that there had been an explosion, but the cause was unknown.

"There are casualties," he added, after speaking to an engineer in the industrial area. He also explained that a search and rescue operation is underway to find any injured persons trapped in the debris.
