Investigators seek arrest warrant for South Korea's suspended president

South Korean investigators on Monday sought an arrest warrant for the country's suspended president, Yoon Suk Yeol, in connection with the short-lived implementation of martial law.

Yoon has not responded to calls for questioning by the police and the Office for Corruption Investigation, which are jointly investigating whether his Dec. 3 declaration of martial law amounted to mutiny.

The police tried but failed to raid the presidential office during the investigation.

A court in Seoul will now decide whether to issue an arrest warrant for Yoon or not.

Rebellion is one of the charges against which the South Korean president has no immunity.

Yoon Kab-keun, the suspended president's lawyer, called the request for his arrest "unfair" and said the anti-corruption agency has no authority to make such a request.

"Emergency martial law is within the powers of the president," the lawyer told reporters outside Seoul's Western District Court after submitting a written opinion on the arrest warrant request and a letter appointing lawyers.

Yoon was suspended from all presidential duties after being fired by Parliament for temporarily imposing martial law in the country.

Masked troops, equipped with rifles, bulletproof vests and night vision equipment, entered Parliament where they were confronted by staff who challenged them with fire extinguishers.

Martial law only lasted a few hours, as Parliament voted to lift it and Yoon stepped down.

The president's move shocked the nation, which has been a democracy since the 1980s, and caused international alarm among allies such as the United States and trading partners of Asia's fourth-largest economy.

A trial at the Constitutional Court has begun to decide whether Yoon will be reinstated, or permanently dismissed. The court has 180 days to make the decision./REL
