Snow and frost in the USA/State of emergency declared

The United States of America is facing a storm that has brought heavy snowfall and very low temperatures.

The storm is expected to move east over the next two days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

A state of emergency has been declared in the states of Kentucky and Virginia, while authorities have warned residents in Mississippi and Florida of severe weather conditions. Forecasters say the extreme weather is being caused by the polar vortex swirling around the Arctic.

Some areas of Kansas and Indiana could get at least 8 inches of snow. In the central US, there will be closures of schools, institutions and roads.

The authorities have announced that the electricity will be interrupted for a considerable time.

The United Kingdom is also affected by the snowstorm. The worst hit areas are central and northern England, as well as Wales. Temperatures fell to -11C in Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland.

According to local reports, runways at Manchester and Liverpool airports were temporarily closed. Authorities have warned that up to 25cm of snow could fall in northern England.

The UK's National Weather Service reported that melting snow over the next few days could cause flooding in some places.
