The European Union will closely monitor the political movements in Syria and will be close to this country if it aims for peace in the future, but it will not support the Islamization of Syria, said the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock.
She, along with her French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, traveled to Syria on Friday, on behalf of the EU, to see the situation up close.
Speaking to German media, Baerbock said the EU is waiting to see what happens in Syria after years of absolute repression under the leadership of Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted a month ago. .
"But, of course, we in Europe will not be financiers of the Islamization of society", she said.
Baerbock and Barrot met with Syria's de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa during the visit.
Baerbock told German media that her first impression is that society is divided in Syria.
"On the one hand, there is hope for freedom after so many years of civil war, torture and oppression. On the other hand, many people are worried that hope will die for women and ethnic minorities. This has become clear to me", she said.
However, according to her, the new Syrian leader has admitted that he understands the new situation, and that he intends to address the issue of women's participation in public life.
The brutal Assad regime has been toppled by the Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, after nearly 14 years of civil war, which has killed over 500,000 people and displaced millions more.
HTS is a terrorist organization declared by the United States and the European Union.
Assad and his family are in Russia, after the asylum that was approved directly by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
Tens of thousands of people are believed to have been unjustly arrested, tortured and killed during the Assad regime.
