USA, voting for the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 119th Congress begins

The House of Representatives has started voting for the election of the Speaker of the House for the next congress.

Lawmakers gathered on Capitol Hill on Friday to swear in the 119th Congress, but must first elect a speaker of the House before proceeding with any official congressional business.

Speaker-designate Mike Johnson, R-La., is seeking re-election to the top House post, however, the Louisiana Republican must win a majority of the vote to secure another two-year term. Republicans currently hold 219 seats in the chamber, while Democrats hold 215, meaning that if only two Republicans vote against Johnson, he loses on the first ballot.

Several Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Ralph Norman, Tim Burchett and Andy Biggs, have said they remain undecided about whether to vote for Johnson.
