Poland has decided not to invite the Hungarian ambassador to the event to be held on January 3 for the launch of the Polish Presidency of the European Union. This is after Budapest granted political asylum to a former deputy minister who is being investigated for suspected misuse of public funds, a senior official said.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also not been invited to the ceremony to be held in Warsaw, said the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka.

Warsaw has expressed anger after Hungary last month granted political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, the former Polish deputy justice minister who was detained last July as part of an investigation into the misuse of public funds.

Romanowski was quickly released after the president of the European Human Rights Assembly said he had immunity as a member of the body. The former deputy minister denies the charges against him.

"When we invited guests to our gala a month ago, we invited the entire diplomatic corps," Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said during a televised statement on Friday.

"But, after the situation with Deputy Minister Romanowski, the Minister [of Foreign Affairs, Radek] Sikorski decided that the Hungarian ambassador will not be welcome at today's event."

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Council President Antonio Costa are expected to deliver speeches at the inauguration ceremony of Poland's six-month EU Presidency.

Hungary has had the presidency of the EU in the second half of 2024.

Tusk has been a critic of Orban for his stance on the war in Ukraine, but also for policies that Poland considers pro-Russian. Orban has told a Hungarian media that the Government of Tusk considers the Hungarians enemies./REL
