Criticism of Saudi Arabia for increasing the number of death sentences

Two human rights groups have criticized Saudi Arabia for increasing the number of death sentences, saying the country carried out the largest number of executions in the past year.

The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights, which monitors executions in Saudi Arabia, and another organization, Reprive, have said the figures run counter to the state's attempts to present itself as a more open and tolerant country.

Saudi Arabia under de facto leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is spending big on tourist infrastructure as it seeks to diversify its oil-dependent economy.

According to the two organizations, Saudi Arabia has ordered 345 executions in 2024.

According to them, the annual number of executions has almost doubled compared to the previous year.

"These murders reveal the reality of Mohammed bin Salman's Saudi Arabia," said Jeed Basyouni, leader of the Reprieve organization.

"How many executions are considered excessive until the World Cup is organized in Saudi Arabia in 2034? According to the current figure, it should go to 3,000", he said.

Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that orders the most death sentences.

Only China and Iran executed more people in 2023, according to Amnesty International.

The Saudi authorities state that the death penalty is necessary to maintain public order and that this penalty is used only when all other options have been exhausted./REL
