Five people in Germany were killed and a police officer was seriously injured in accidents related to the powerful fireworks that Germans set off as they traditionally celebrate the new year, German police said in a preliminary count.

Germans celebrate the new year with a particularly heavy use of fireworks, prompting a recurring debate about outlawing the most powerful fireworks, given the high number of injuries each year, as well as the pollution and noise they cause.

About 13 officers were injured as a result of fireworks accidents starting in 2025, including one more seriously, police spokesman Florian Nath said. Around 330 people were arrested in the capital Berlin overnight, German police said, adding that unlike in previous years, "there was no violence or major incidents".

Near Paderborn in the northwestern region of North Rhine-Westphalia, a 24-year-old man died after a pyrotechnic rocket exploded, according to local police, who believe the victim had made the device himself.

In Oschatz, Saxony, a 45-year-old man died of severe head injuries when he set fire to a "pyrotechnic bomb". According to the police, it was a powerful firework of the F4 category, which requires a special permit for purchase.

In the same eastern Saxony region, a 50-year-old man died on the spot from head injuries in the town of Hartha when he tried to detonate a pyrotechnic pipe bomb, a police spokesman said. Near Hamburg in the north, a 20-year-old man died while lighting a pyrotechnic firework.

Finally, in Kremen, near Berlin, a man died from "improper handling" of pyrotechnic devices, according to local police. Three other people in the region were seriously injured in similar circumstances.
