Elon Musk, born in Pretoria, South Africa, is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time. Musk has achieved world fame as the chief executive of the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla and the private space company SpaceX. Musk was an early investor in several technology companies, and in October 2022, he completed a deal to acquire X, formerly Twitter.

Elon Reeve Musk was born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa, the eldest of three children. His father was an engineer from South Africa, and his mother was a Canadian model and nutritionist.

He has described his childhood as difficult, affected by his parents' divorce, bullying at school and his difficulty adjusting to social life due to Asperger's Syndrome.

Musk attended the private, English-speaking Waterkloof House Preparatory School. He started a year early and later graduated from Pretoria Boys School.

Technology became an escape for Musk. At age 10, he was introduced to programming using an early and relatively inexpensive home computer. Before long, Musk had become proficient enough to create a game called “Blastar”.

At the age of 17, Musk moved to Canada. He would later acquire Canadian citizenship through his mother.

After two years at Queen's University, Musk transferred to the University of Pennsylvania.

Musk graduated with a bachelor's degree in physics and a second bachelor's degree in economics from the Wharton School.

At the age of 24, Musk moved to California to pursue a doctorate at Stanford University, but failed to complete it.

In 1995, with $15,000 and his younger brother Kimbal at his side, Musk founded Zip2, an online software company that would help newspapers develop online city guides.

Four years later, Zip2 was acquired by Compaq Computer Corporation for $307 million and stock options worth $34 million. Musk used the money to create X.com.

X.com merged with a money transfer firm called Confinity and the resulting company became known as PayPal. Peter Thiel ousted Musk as PayPal CEO before eBay ( EBAY ) bought the payments company for $1.5 billion, but Musk still benefited from the acquisition via his 11.7% stake in PayPal.

Musk also became involved in the electric car venture as an early investor in 2004, contributing around $6.3 million. Under his watch, Tesla has become the world's most valuable car manufacturer.

Much of Musk's wealth stems from his Tesla stock and options, which the Washington Post reported to be worth about $120 million as of June 2024. That number is likely even higher now, as Bloomberg reported that the stock of Tesla were up 34 percent in the week - plus after the November 2024 election.

Musk's first major financial gain came through the sale of Zip2 in 1999, which netted him $22 million for his stock. He invested that money in X.com, which turned into a $165 million after eBay bought the renamed PayPal in 2002 and allowed Musk to make his first billion. /CNA
