Israel reports drone and missile attacks from Yemen

The Israeli military said it shot down a missile and a drone launched from Yemen on January 3. This was the latest in a series of attacks from Yemen targeting Israel in recent weeks.

"A rocket was launched from Yemen and passed into Israeli territory. The missile crashed," the army said in a statement published on its Telegram channel.

"We have received a report regarding the fall of fragments of a downed rocket in the Modi area in central Israel and we are verifying the details of this report," the army added.

Israel's emergency services authority said some people were treated for injuries or panic attacks as they walked through shelters after the attack sirens went off.

Hours later, the Israeli military said it shot down a drone launched by Yemen.

According to the military, the drone crashed before entering Israeli territory.

On Tuesday, Israel said it had shot down a missile fired from Yemen.

Most of Yemen is controlled by Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran. Rebels have repeatedly fired rockets and drones at Israel - but also at ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden - in what they call solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, in the war between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by The United States and the European Union.

The Houthi rebels have also intensified their attacks since November last year, when a ceasefire was reached between Israel and Hezbollah - the US-designated terrorist group - in Lebanon.

Israel also attacked Yemen at the end of December, targeting the international airport in Sanaa./REL
