Austria's Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, has said he will resign in the coming days as chancellor and as party leader, following the failure of talks to form a government coalition.

The chancellor has said that his party, the conservative People's Party - and the Social Democrats - have not agreed on key issues.

The Neoliberals, another party involved in the talks, also withdrew on Friday.

In September, the far-right Freedom Party scored unprecedented victories in Austria's general elections, but other parties said they would not form a coalition with the leader of this political entity, Herbert Kickl.

The collapse of the talks could result in conservatives starting talks with the extreme right, or even organizing new elections, analysts estimate.

The Freedom Party – friendly to Russia – was previously in power. She seems likely to welcome new elections, as public opinion polls suggest further growth beyond September.

This party has criticized the state president, Alexander Van der Bellen, for "the chaos created and the time lost".

The turnout in the September elections was 77.3 percent, while the main topics were those of migration, asylum and the economy at the time of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Kickl had promised to restore security for the Austrians.

The party he leads is tough on migration issues and promotes the idea of ??re-migration, which involves sending asylum seekers to their countries of origin.

The Freedom Party was founded by ex-Nazis in the 1950s.

Two days before the September elections, some candidates were caught singing Nazi songs at a funeral, although the party later denied everything./REL
