Clinton, Soros and Bono among Medal of Freedom honorees

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, billionaire George Soros, U2 member Bono, actors Denzel Washington and Michael J Fox, soccer player Lionel Messi, and Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour are some of the figures who have been honored with the highest American civilian medal by the outgoing president of the United States, Joe Biden.

Through a ceremony at the White House, they have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

This year, 19 people from the world of culture, politics and activism were honored.

The White House said that the personalities were chosen for "the good work they have done and the extraordinary contribution to the world".

"Together you have left an indelible mark, I say this with sincerity, you have left an indelible mark in our country", said Biden.

Hillary Clinton was also the Democratic candidate in the 2016 presidential race.

Bono, whose real name is Paul David Hewson, has been honored with the highest cultural award in France as well. He is known for his work against poverty and the support offered to those infected with the HIV virus.

The White House said billionaire philanthropist and major Democratic donor George Soros "has supported organizations and projects around the world that have strengthened democracy, human rights, education and social justice."

Honoring with this medal is a tradition created by former President John F. Kennedy.

The award is given at the discretion of the president, but also with the advice of external panels.

In the past, the athlete Simone Biles, the Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh and the founder of the Apple company, Steve Jobs, have been honored with this medal./REL
