The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has pardoned 39 Americans convicted of non-violent criminal offenses, as well as reduced the sentences of nearly 1,500 other people.

The White House said this is the largest number of presidential pardons in a single day. She has not disclosed the names of the people pardoned.

Biden said he would take more such steps in the coming weeks and would continue to review requests for clemency.

"America was built on the promise of opportunity and second chances," Biden said in a statement.

"As president, I have the honor of showing mercy to people who have demonstrated repentance and rehabilitation, giving Americans the opportunity to participate in everyday life and contribute to their communities, and taking steps to remove their criminal convictions. those convicted of non-violent crimes, especially those convicted of drugs," he said.

Biden made the decision weeks after he pardoned his son, Hunter, who was being prosecuted for gun and tax offenses.

Biden is facing pressure from advocacy groups to pardon more people, including those on death row, before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January.

The people pardoned Thursday were convicted of nonviolent crimes, such as drugs, and have turned their lives around for the better, White House lawyers said.

In the past, the president had pardoned 21 people and commuted the sentences of 122 others.

He also pardoned those convicted of using and possessing marijuana on federal lands and in the District of Columbia, and pardoned former members of the US military convicted of violating the now-repealed ban on gay sex in the military./ REL
