Syria's new prime minister calls on Syrian refugees to return

Syria's new prime minister called on Syrians who have sought refuge abroad to return to Syria after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.

Mohammad al-Bashir, appointed by the rebel groups as leader of the transitional government, told the Italian daily, Corriere della Sera, that one of his first goals is "the return of the millions of Syrian refugees who are abroad".

"Their human capital, their experience will enable the country to thrive," Bashir said in the interview published Wednesday.

"I have a call to all Syrians abroad: Syria is now a free country that has gained its pride and dignity. Come back! We need to rebuild it, be reborn and we need everyone's help," he said.

The Assad regime in Syria fell on December 8, when the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) organization - declared a terrorist organization by the US - and its allies took power.

The country's nearly 14-year civil war left 500,000 people dead and forced half the population from their homes - millions of whom sought refuge abroad.

After the departure of Assad, Syria faces great uncertainties.

There are especially concerns about sectarian violence, even though HTS has tried to assure religious minorities that they will be safe in the new Syria.

The country's various communities, including Christians, Kurds and Alawites, are now waiting to see what kind of government Bashir will lead.

The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, called on Wednesday for "mutual respect" between religions in Syria./ Rel
