The overthrow of the 50-year-old regime of the Assad family in Syria is expected to have a major impact on the entire Middle East region. While Syrians are celebrating his fall, the world is watching closely for further developments in this country made up of various sects and ethnic groups, each backed by a regional power. Among the first effects of this development is the powerful blow that was given to the influence of Iran and Russia in the Middle East.
In an interview for Voice of America from Amman, Jordan, Arianit Shehu, Senior Director for the Middle East, at the National Democratic Institute (NDI), talks about what is expected to happen in the region.
Mr. Shehu says that currently in Syria there is a golden opportunity for a smooth transition towards a functional democracy. But for this to be achieved, according to him, a necessary condition would be the inclusion of all minorities and different ethnic and religious groups.
VOA: You've been working in the Middle East for over a decade, specifically in Syria during the last decade of the civil war there. The recent developments in Syria, in particular the rapid advance of the rebels and the overthrow of Bashar Al Assad in a matter of days surprised virtually all Western countries. How do you explain this course of events?
Arianit Shehu: As for accuracy and fair information of the viewers, first of all I have more than 20 years in the Middle East managing the programs of the American government for democracy. It is true that the fight against ISIS has been one of the main priorities of the programs that I manage, but we have also worked a lot with the consolidation of the Syrian opposition, we have worked a lot with the welfare of the citizens, as much as it has been possible inside Syria, to ensure of water supply, food supplies, the support of the white helmets in their noble work that they have done during this decade.
The fall of Bashar al Assad was perhaps a little surprising in its fragility, but not in the fall of the Assad regime itself. It was necessary and it was expected that the day would come when Bashar al-Assad would fall (from power). Bashar Al Assad's regime should have been replaced or overthrown 10 years ago. But as you know and as shallow as you are, with the support of Iran and Russia he was enabled to continue to stay and continue his terror against the Syrian citizens.
Sirianët do ta zgjedhin.
Arianit Shehu: The statement must be defined and we will see after this administration takes office, it must be defined what this disengagement should mean. Is it military disengagement, disengagement with troops? I am working these days in numerous meetings with very high officials of the US government, on engagement options and based on the resources and the political interests and the national interest of the US government. We are working, we are also in contact with members of the new administration, in informing them about the current situation in Syria, on the importance of continuing to support the democratization of Syria, not only to increase the well-being of 22 million Syrians, but also for security and peace in the region and in the world. You mentioned it yourself earlier, Syria and the region can very easily become a suitable territory for the revival of very powerful extremist groups, as we have seen ISIS during the last decade.
Voice of America: Mr. Shehu, what are the responsibilities of your organization, as an organization that supports democratic processes in countries in turmoil, in this new context already created?
Arianit Shehu: We have been in the region for a very long time, more than 30 years. We have been part of many processes. We are part of the implementation of resolution 2254, which is related to the peace process in Syria. We know all the actors in the region. We have very good relations with all the progressive forces in the region and the diaspora, which are involved in the processes not only in Syria, but also in the region. We have sufficient resources to continue our commitment, both in minimizing the risk of the re-emergence of terrorist groups and groups that use violence as a political tool, but also in supporting the citizens of Syria and in the region to fulfill their vision and aspirations. for peace, security and democracy./Voice of America
