The European Union's Fundamental Rights Agency, FRA, said that the racist approach of the police "is widely under-reported in the EU".

In a report published on Wednesday, the Vienna-based agency said most EU countries "have no official sources of data on incidents of racism and discrimination involving the police".

According to the report, only a few countries have recorded incidents of police racism separately.

Of these, only Germany, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands publish the data.

The report builds on previous research by the FRA, which shows that police are more likely to detain young people, ethnic minorities, Muslims or people who do not identify as heterosexual.

"The number of recorded incidents of police racism is very low," the report states.

"This makes it impossible to evaluate the case", according to him.

The FRA also said that, in recent years in the EU, several people from ethnic minority backgrounds have been shot dead "after interactions with the police".

The report noted that many European countries have police watchdogs, but that many of them are not independent.

He called on countries to increase diversity in their police forces.

In 2022, the FRA surveyed people of African descent in 13 EU countries about being stopped by the police.

The survey found that the largest number of people of African origin detained was in Austria, followed by Germany and Ireland.
