The European Council approved on Monday an aid package of 13 million euros to support Albania's army.

The news was announced by the Office of the European Union in Tirana, which described the decision as a historic achievement for Albania.

The fund has been allocated to support the Albanian armed forces within the framework of the European Peace Mechanism.

"This initiative aims to strengthen Albania's military capabilities and increase regional security," said the European Union Office in Tirana.

In a post on X - the platform formerly known as Twitter - the EU Office said the aid is aimed at increasing the operational effectiveness of mobility, maneuverability and defence.

According to her, these funds will strengthen Albania's capacity regarding its participation in the operations and missions of the Common Security and Defense Policy of the EU, as well as in any international coalition.

The outgoing chief diplomat of the EU, Joseph Borrell, has declared that Albania is a reliable partner for security.

"The decision is an important achievement in our security and defense cooperation. Also, it reflects our assessment of Albania's position in full line with the Common Security and Defense Policy of the EU, a very clear expression of Albania's strategic choice for a future within the EU," Borrell said. .

Within the framework of the European Peace Mechanism, Albania will provide equipment that is not designed to produce physical elimination force and, where needed, other supplies and services, including technical training.

The Albanian ground force will be equipped with multifunctional light armored vehicles, to ensure high mobility and maneuverability in all types of terrain and regardless of weather conditions, as well as to ensure the protection of personnel against light weapons and explosives.

About three months ago, the Ministry of Defense in Albania drafted the military strategy 2024-2033, according to which, until 2033, over 9,500 people should serve in the ranks of the Albanian army, out of about 6,500 currently.

During the summit held in Washington a few days ago, for the 75th anniversary of NATO, Albania has signed an agreement for securing and facilitating military movement along the VIII Pan-European Corridor, together with Italy, Bulgaria and North Macedonia.

The signing of the agreement is considered support towards Albania's vision for Corridor VIII as well as the project for the construction of the NATO Naval Base in Porto Romano, which will serve as the main gateway to the Western Balkans and further, to the Black Sea.

The Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, said in June that Albania is determined to transform the military forces and capacities.
