EU moves towards tougher migrant deportation law

The European Parliament is expected to vote soon on a new law on the return of undocumented migrants, after the parliamentary committee on civil liberties approved its version.

The law aims to increase the number of migrants returned from the EU, as currently only about 20% of deportation decisions are actually implemented in the union countries.

The proposal includes several stronger measures against irregular migration:

-The possibility for authorities to search homes or other places where migrants with deportation orders may be found.

-Detention centers outside the EU, where migrants can be sent before or during the return process.

-Ban of up to two years for persons who refuse to leave EU territory.

EU countries can also send migrants to third countries that are not their country of origin, if there is an agreement with that country to host deportation centers.

Civil society organizations and some left-wing parties warn that the law could jeopardize migrants' rights, create detention centers in countries where legal protection is unclear, and send people to countries they have no ties to. /CNA
