After many years of negotiations, the European Parliament has approved a major reform of immigration and asylum rules in the European Union.

The EU Pact on Immigration and Asylum has been discussed since 2015.

Now, after approval, it must enter into force within two years.

The pact is designed to speed up the asylum process and enable the faster return of migrants to their homelands.

This document will ask EU member states to share responsibility for asylum seekers.

Last year, around 380,000 illegal crossings were registered across the borders of the European bloc, the highest figure since 2016.

The immigration pact is supported by two main political groups – the center-right European People's Party and the center-left Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has said that "the balance between solidarity and responsibility has been reached. We have made history with a legislative framework to manage immigration and asylum in the EU."

However, left-wing and far-right groups have opposed the deal.

Many non-governmental organizations have also asked the legislators not to vote for this reform.

The international human rights organization, Amnesty International, has warned that this reform may result in an increase in the suffering of asylum seekers./ CNA
