"Drop the charges against Assange?" Reacts Biden: I'm thinking
Julian Assange

In March, the Biden administration presented another exit strategy to end the sharp political-legal affair of the WikiLeaks founder, who in 2010 published tens of thousands of classified documents related to US national security, one of the most embarrassing news.

The White House's idea was a plea deal to a lesser crime than conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act.

A deal would avoid his extradition from London to the US, paving the way for his freedom.

Assange could be settled remotely, without ever setting foot in the United States, and would probably be released from prison soon after, given the five years already served in the British capital.

What did Julian Assange do and what is WikiLeaks?

In 2010, the WikiLeaks founder released a trove of top-secret military documents and confidential diplomatic cables, from Afghanistan to Iran and Guantanamo to relations with allies, seriously endangering and embarrassing the US.

Since then his ordeal began: the immediate rape charge in Sweden (which was later dropped), the long asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, the arrest after being kicked out of the diplomatic office for his controversial behavior. Barack Obama decided not to sue Assange so as not to set a precedent against the media publishing classified information.

And he commuted the 35-year sentence, freeing after seven years Chelsea Manning, the Army analyst who leaked the material to Wikileaks. Only in 2019, the US Department of Justice announced the indictment, under the administration of Donald Trump.

But it seems that initially the president at the time had secretly offered Assange a pardon on one condition: to clear Russia of suspicions that it had participated in the disclosure through Wikileaks of hacked Democratic Party emails in 2016./ CNA
