At least 22 people have died in torrential rains that hit the state of Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. The fire service confirmed 16 deaths in the city of Juiz de Fora and six in Uba. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences for the loss of life in a post on “X”.

"We are focused on providing humanitarian assistance, restoring basic services, supporting the displaced, and assisting in reconstruction," he wrote.

About 440 people were forced to evacuate their homes in Juiz de Fora, according to the city's municipal authority, after the rain caused flooding and landslides and resulted in the suspension of classes at schools.

The Brazilian government has declared a state of disaster in Juiz de Fora, accelerating relief and humanitarian aid operations. Much of Brazil is entering the peak of the rainy season during the summer months, from December to March, which often brings torrential rains, lightning, flooding and landslides.

The city of Juiz de Fora said it was the wettest February in the city's history, with the amount of water already falling twice as much as is expected in a month. The city's mayor, Margarida Salomao, said in a statement on social media that the situation was critical. /CNA
