EU Trade Commissioner calls on MEPs to vote on trade deal with US

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic urged MEPs on Tuesday to press ahead with the EU-US trade pact, even as Washington announces new tariffs and legal uncertainty casts doubt on the terms of the deal.

The deal was abruptly frozen on Monday, after a ruling by the United States Supreme Court declared illegal most of the tariffs imposed worldwide by the White House in 2025. Shortly after the ruling, US President Donald Trump announced new 10% tariffs on imports from US allies, including the EU.

"It is imperative that we continue the process forward in implementing our commitments. A plenary vote in March should remain our objective, provided, of course, that we receive more clarity from the US ," Sefcovic told MEPs.

He also said that his American counterparts had called him on Saturday to "assure" him that they would "adhere" to the agreement if the EU respected it.

But the agreement, reached in July 2025 by Trump and EC President Ursula von der Leyen after weeks of trade disputes, is now on hold and requires the approval of the European Parliament to enter into force.

Widely seen in Brussels as unequal, the deal maintains US tariffs of 15% on EU goods, while the bloc completely removes its own tariffs on American goods and pledges to invest hundreds of billions of euros in the US.

Since the Supreme Court decision and the aftermath in Washington, the European Commission has urged the White House to honor the agreement and has sought clarity on the next steps, as well as on the duration and scope of the new tariffs that Trump announced following the decision.

"Whatever was covered by the agreement of July last year should still be covered ," said European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho. /CNA
