Fuel excise tax reduction announced by 20%, Transparency Board expected to

The decision to reduce fuel excise duty by 20% is expected to be made public soon, in an effort to curb the continuous increase in prices in the market. In parallel, the re-establishment of the Transparency Board is also expected, as a mechanism for monitoring and controlling hydrocarbon prices.

According to the plan, the excise tax will decrease from 39.6 lek to 31.68 lek per liter. Authorities emphasize that this decision aims to guarantee more controlled prices and reduce abuses in the market. The set prices will be a ceiling, and any trading above them may be accompanied by penalties.

The re-establishment of the Transparency Board is expected to play a key role in this process, overseeing the implementation of prices and increasing transparency for consumers.

For more than two weeks, since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, oil and gasoline prices in the country have been steadily increasing. According to a survey conducted on March 19, prices at points of sale range from 199 to 214 lek per liter, marking an increase of about 9 lek compared to midweek.

Compared to the period before the conflict, hydrocarbon prices in the retail market are about 14% higher. The government aims to stabilize the situation and ease the burden on citizens through these measures./ CNA
