The Deputy Mayor of Tirana Municipal Council, Dorian Teliti, has reacted regarding the abandonment of the public transport sector by the state and the municipality.

Teliti writes that this sector is on the verge of crisis, precisely because of the abandonment made by the government in these moments of crisis.

"While today the public transport associations officially announced the interruption of service from next week, at the Municipal Council meeting a few days ago, the socialist majority rejected my request to include on the agenda the discussion on: 'the lack of crisis management in the capital's urban transport'."

The reality is clear: the service is heading towards economic collapse and citizens are paying the cost of mismanagement and lack of vision.

Therefore, today two calls are extremely important:

1. The government should urgently reduce fuel taxes. There can be no sustainable public transport when Albania bears the highest fiscal burden in the region on oil. A fiscal policy is needed that directly reduces the cost of service, so that this burden does not go either to the citizen's ticket or to the bankruptcy of the lines.

2. I call on the socialist councilors of the Capital to put aside the arrogance of the cardboard and urgently convene the Municipal Council in an extraordinary session. To achieve full transparency on the activity, challenges, needs of the sector and to make courageous decisions for concrete support to market operators. Public transport is not a luxury, but a right and a vital need.

"If we do not react, urban transport in Tirana will very quickly go towards complete collapse. The capital cannot be governed with 'deaf ears' to the alarms that sound every day!", Teliti emphasized./ CNA
