Albania, in the eyes of British tourists/ Affordable alternative for winter

After years spent wintering in Turkey, some travelers are discovering Albania as a more economical destination with authentic experiences.

Journalist and travel expert Heidi Fuller-Love, who has lived in a dozen countries including Argentina, Cambodia and France, and then settled in Greece, tells of her experience in the historic cities and coasts of Albania.

In Berat, Fuller-Love enjoyed a traditional dinner for just £9, including specialties such as cheese fritters, spinach pie and sour cream casserole.

“Turkey was always my favorite winter destination, but with the rising cost, Albania turned out to be a fantastic alternative,” she writes, adding that the country offers almost free seaside resorts, excellent food, and competitively priced hotels.

The article also highlights the development of tourism in Albania. While the country remained isolated for decades during the Enver Hoxha regime, today it attracts more tourists and foreign investors.

In 2024 alone, Albania was visited by 11.7 million visitors, up from 6.2 million in 2019. A major private project, such as the transformation of Sazan Island into a five-star resort, shows that the country is becoming increasingly popular.

Fuller-Love describes her experience in Tirana, Kruja, Gjirokastra, and the Tale coast, highlighting the hospitality of Albanians and the opportunities for very low-cost winter tourism.

The journalist says: “As a winter alternative to Turkey, Albania exceeds expectations and offers authentic experiences for every visitor.”

Prime Minister Rama has also reacted to the news, emphasizing that this is another international assessment of Albania.

"The prestigious British newspaper "The Telegraph" ranks our country among the most affordable and attractive destinations in Europe, praising not only the natural beauties and historical cities, but also the Albanian hospitality and competitive costs for visitors."

"From the Ionian and Adriatic coasts, to the majestic Alps and our cultural heritage, Albania is increasingly consolidating itself on the international tourism map as an authentic, beautiful and affordable choice," Rama said alongside the publication of the article./ CNA
