For years, Albania has been ranked in the list of countries with the highest level of emigration of the educated population, known as the "Brain Drain" phenomenon in relation to the population.

The FDI Intelligence section in the Financial Times calculated that Albania, together with 9 African countries, had the highest level of brain migration in 2022 as well (see chart below).

"FDI Intelligence" analyzed data from 179 countries around the world and for 2022, it found that the Polynesian island of Samoa was the most affected nation, with the highest level of "human capital and brain drain" emigration.

It was followed by Jamaica, Palestine, Micronesia, Somalia, Eritrea, El Salvador, Albania, Haiti and Guyana. As can be seen from the data, Albania is the only country outside Africa for the highest level of brain emigration, ranking 8th globally in 2022.

The brain drain situation from Albania was more serious before the Covi-19 pandemic. The study shows that Albania was fourth in the global ranking for the high level of brain emigration.

Brain drain, which refers to large numbers of educated or professional people moving to live and work abroad, can weigh heavily on a country's development prospects. The authors of the report noted that brain drain was a feature of island states except Albania.

The authors of the study found that brain migration comes as a combination of political, climatic and economic factors. In addition to small island developing states, countries in sub-Saharan Africa are also affected by the outflow of human capital.

Almost half of the 89 countries had above-average brain drain, and most of them are in sub-Saharan Africa, according to FDI's analysis.

While the reasons for emigration vary between individuals and countries, brain drain is broadly influenced by political, economic and environmental pressures.

Labor shortages since the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as long-term aging, have left some countries competing to attract skilled people, which has accelerated the brain drain from other countries.

High-income countries, which typically offer better economic opportunities and more political stability, tend to have much lower levels of human capital outflow.

In 2022, Australia had the lowest index score of 0.4, followed by Sweden (0.6), Norway (0.6), Canada (0.7) and Switzerland (0.8). Qatar, an oil-rich state, was the only Middle Eastern name to appear in the 10 lowest-scoring brain drain indicators.

All studies show that Albania was involved in a new wave of immigration in the last decade, which affected the entire population and education levels. Emigration has caused an emergency for employees in all businesses./ Monitor.al
