Shkodra, 113 cases in 2025/ World Cancer Day, appeal for more checks

During 2025, 113 new cancer cases were identified at the Shkodra Regional Hospital.

On World Cancer Day, doctors highlight a worrying trend: the increase in the number of patients and the diagnosis of the disease at an increasingly younger age. Lung cancer remains the most common form, followed by breast cancer.

" February 4 is a global awareness day on predisposing factors, awareness and preventive strategies. All of this with the aim of reducing mortality. We are noticing the increase in those affected throughout the country. Even in Shkodra, in 2025, 113 new cases of cancer were discovered. We are more concerned about the decrease in age, young people are increasingly affected by cancer. What we advise is to perform check-ups, screening tests. Because there are several types of cancer that can be caught in the early stages. The most common cancer is lung cancer, followed by breast cancer. Promoting a healthy lifestyle, physical activity, and not smoking are the advice we give to the population. We have several types of therapies in Shkodra, the most frequent diagnoses are breast, colon, and stomach cancer ," said Kleva Qeraj, head of the palliative care department in Shkodra.

Specialists emphasize that periodic check-ups and screenings are essential for the prevention and early detection of cancer. However, in many cases, patients only present for treatment when the disease has advanced.

"There is a kind of increase in interest in breast screenings, but again the greatest awareness remains only in October. Unfortunately, the discovery is still in its late stages. On this day, governments, organizations, medical personnel need to promote strategies, support patients, and emphasize the importance of scientific research ," said Qeraj.

On this February 4th, oncologists call for greater societal awareness, support for those affected, and investment in scientific research to fight cancer./CNA
