"Electoral Reform, a decisive priority"/ Gonzato: The distinguishing

The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, participated in the roundtable discussion of the Special Commission on Electoral Reform.

During his speech, Gonzato stated that in the current political situation, dialogue is essential for the implementation of reform and in compliance with international standards.

He emphasized that Electoral Reform is a democratic necessity, while adding that citizens must ensure that the elections that will be held will be free and fair. Among other things, the ambassador stated that the line of distinction between the state and the party should be more clearly emphasized.

"In the current political context, the spirit of dialogue on reform is essential. I welcome the understanding between the two co-chairs that reform must also meet international standards."

The rule of law and unwavering adherence to European standards is key for Albania and its integration process. Electoral reform is a democratic necessity. Citizens must be confident that the elections were free and fair.

When funding sources are unclear, trust in these democratic institutions is undermined. Thus, the law on political party financing is a prerequisite for membership. Electoral reform remains a crucial priority.

There has been talk of misuse of public resources, digital campaigns, and third-party financing. Electoral Reform should guarantee political pluralism and ensure a level playing field for all political actors. The ODIHR report spoke about the use of the administration by the ruling party, this is a key point that needs to be addressed.

The line between state and party must be more clearly drawn. Voters must have access to meaningful information. Anti-corruption must also be addressed. This year there is a strong focus to ensure that Albania undertakes an implementation of the anti-corruption strategy in all areas such as public procurement. The electoral and legal frameworks must strengthen integrity. We will mobilize expertise in this commission. We encourage all actors to work constructively to implement reforms that will help integrate Albania”, Gonzato said. /CNA
