Cases when SPAK needs to "lock down"

2026-03-13 17:35:00, Aktualitet CNA

Official data speak of around 2,744 pre-trial detainees in 2025, which represents a high percentage in relation to the total number of people in prisons, although it is the lowest number of people in pre-trial detention in the last 10 years.

The figure according to EU standards may be even lower because in many European Union countries, a person who has received a sentence in the Court of Fact is called a convict, not a detainee without an Appeals decision.

It is a different standard and if one were to look at these 2,744 citizens to see who has received the First Instance decision, then the number of detainees would appear to be very low, but this is a standard that is not applied in Albania.

According to these official data, only 3.35% of the 2744 people are imprisoned at the request of SPAK and by decision of the GJKKO, since SPAK and prosecutors cannot keep you in detention, but we need to see the facts and evidence for the court to create confidence why the person should remain in detention. And this is a clear legal practice already in the Criminal Code.

In fact, all the media noise is made as if SPAK has filled the prisons. This is untrue, as the General Jurisdiction Prosecutor's Office has filled the prisons with decisions from district courts, following massive reports made by the State Police.

But when it is the case, why should SPAK "lock it up"?

From all the data verified and confirmed by CNA, there is only one senior official in custody on duty in Albania and his name is Erion Veliaj, who has 9 charges of corruption and there are several other charges: laundering the proceeds of a criminal offense, failure to declare assets, abuse of office and bringing prohibited items into prison. The only senior official.

Ilir Beqaj is on trial, but he is not an official, he is a former official; Ilir Meta is on trial, but he is not an official, he is a former official, and many other former officials.

There are two or three mayors who have been arrested, detained and sentenced, but there are also those who have been prosecuted while at large while they have been sentenced, such as the case of Edison Memolla, the case of the prosecution of former MP Plarent Ndreca, the case of the prosecution of the mayor of Shkodra, Benet Beci, or several other state officials, directors of the ARAs, heads of institutions, who are not in detention, but have lighter security measures.

Today they only have one senior official in custody.

Now everything is being done, figures are being manipulated, propaganda has begun, movements by Sokol Sadushi with a structured group, with lobbying reports, with people under indictment defending him, with media actions, with a single goal: to get Erion Veliaj out of prison, the official with 9 charges of corruption and 4 other serious criminal charges, who is the only one in the detention cells.

They should also take out Erion and put the key in SPAK!

If a man comes out, who has 13 serious criminal charges and has been caught several times tampering with evidence, or goes on wiretaps with scandalous warrants and publicly attacks and intimidates witnesses and the judiciary, then who should be in custody? The ordinary citizen? The one who builds a garden without a permit? Or the one who took water to wash himself?

If Erion Veliaj, who is facing very serious criminal charges and risks dozens of years in prison, is released from detention and taken home, while there is a second investigation against him regarding his brother's company, while he is caught tampering with evidence, while it is proven that even in prison he continues to lobby with lies, media attacks, and intimidate witnesses, then take SPAK and put the key in, because the only corrupt official in office who is accused of corruption in prison is Erion Veliaj, who is in detention.

Beyond any presumption of innocence, Erion Veliaj was sent the file with the charges on July 24, 2025. Today, after seven months, Erion Veliaj does not face the charges in court, even though the lawyers have admitted in court, in sessions, that they have been familiar with the acts.

We are faced with the fact that if Sadushi's actions, with the movements of Olsi Çela, with the blessings of lobbyists or with the support of a structured group of politicians under indictment or media paid by Veliaj's brother, manage to get Erion out of detention, then go and give SPAK the key because there is no reason for it to stay around to deal with 50 thousand new lek or a crate of fish.

This is the moment to make a break with true justice, with the fight against corruption or the failure to do so. Beyond the propaganda, the fight against corruption to escape to the EU, we are faced with the fact that there are dozens of accused officials, but very few of them in custody, all of them are pursued free for various criminal circumstances and reasons. As for the actions of structured groups to bring Erion Veliaj out, in the end the result should be: 'put the key to SPAK'./ CNA
